RE: Vintage Pieces

True “vintage” Fiesta was first manufactured and marketed by Homer Laughlin China Company of Newell, West Virginia in 1936. The original shapes were designed by the company’s art director, Frederick Rhead. Fiestaware became quite popular because of its bright colors, durable construction, distinctive art-deco shapes and design, affordability, and great mass marketing. Fiesta remained popular for almost 25 years until it was restyled in 1959 and replaced with Fiesta Ironstone, which was discontinued in 1973. Vintage Fiesta became an increasingly desirable collectable after it was discontinued fetching extravagant prices in antique stores and on online auction sites. Homer Laughlin China Company was not unaware of this and cleverly reintroduced Fiesta in 1986 to celebrate its 50th anniversary with many new pieces and in many of the original shapes. “New Fiesta” came in new colors and some colors that are quite close to the original “vintage” colors. True vintage pieces continue command very high prices from collectors. Homer Laughlin has also limited production of certain colors and pieces in the “New Fiesta” line to encourage collection. If you are interested in collecting either true “vintage” Fiesta or “new,” I would encourage you to thoroughly research the subject. Unfortunately, many “dealers” and on-line sources represent “new” as “vintage.” Typically true vintage pieces command much higher prices than new. I hope this was helpful.
